star Jimmy Butler.

Why are Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr concerned about trading Jimmy Butler?

The Golden State Warriors, currently outside the Play-In Tournament picture, are considering roster changes to regain their championship form. While Butler’s talent is undeniable, Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo! Sports reports that Stephen Curry and Kerr have specific concerns about his impact on team chemistry.

“My league sources say Stephen Curry specifically has concerns over Jimmy Butler’s fit in the locker room, and Steve Kerr shares those feelings,” O’Connor stated. “Golden State’s indecision about trading for Butler seems to be largely tied to Steph and Kerr’s worry about personality fit there.”

More about Butler’s reputation and past locker room issues

Jimmy Butler has established himself as a fierce competitor and a proven leader on the court, but his past conflicts in team environments raise questions about how he would mesh with the Golden State Warriors. During his brief stint with the Timberwolves, Butler played a key role in ending their 14-year playoff drought in 2018. However, his tenure in Minnesota was short-lived after he reportedly clashed with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins during a heated practice session, leading to his trade to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Given the Warriors’ emphasis on team chemistry and their well-documented system of unselfish play, it’s understandable why Stephen Curry and Kerr might be hesitant to bring in a strong personality like Butler.

Are the Golden State Warriors planning for something bigger?

If Golden State ultimately decides against pursuing Butler, they may shift their focus to offseason opportunities. O’Connor speculated that the team could hold off on major trades and instead target a marquee player during the summer.
“It should surprise nobody if the Golden State Warriors end up holding onto their pieces, waiting until the summer, hope Kevin Durant wants to head back to the Bay Area or some other star wants to go there, and they bypass the chance to go get Jimmy Butler,” he noted.
