London’s Sexy Fish Opens a Lavish Miami Outpost

Sexy Fish MIAMI Crab and Bone Marrow

In the exchange of high-profile restaurants between marquee cities, we’ve seen LA chefs opening in Hong Kong, Tokyo chefs setting up shop in Vegas, and even a Monte Carlo restaurateur throwing open the doors on an extravagant new Mediterranean eatery (Casa Limone) in Midtown, NYC, in the middle of a global pandemic. But we’re pretty sure no other fashionable London restaurant has ever made a second home in Miami – which is precisely what the wildly popular Sexy Fish has just gone and done.

The cleverly named hotspot arrived in poshie Mayfair in 2015, counting the likes of Hakkasan, Cecconi’s, Annabel’s (which shares an owner, Richard Caring) and even The Ritz amongst its stylish neighbors. And with its extravagant decor, as well as a consistently electric atmosphere, it quickly drew the very famous and very fabulous into its glittering confines, including Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B. Jordan, Katy Perry, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and Kendall Jenner.

But this past spring it was announced that it would soon have a second location in Miami’s trendy Brickell district, on a busy stretch of S. Miami Avenue – a brave move considering the COVID crisis was (and is) still carrying on. And sure enough, delays followed (it was supposed to have opened in October) – but it at last debuted this month with a splashy bash that even featured a performance by none other than Mary J. Blige.

So what to expect from the Miami outpost? Well, the lavish interiors of the original – and again by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio – are still an immediate feature, with 26 illuminated Frank Gehry fish lamps set against a dazzling waterfall column, a literally larger than life bronze mermaid sculpture by Damien Hirst, and a haunting, crystallized “marlins and squid” wall-mounted installation also by Hirst.

The menus are similarly artistically inclined, with dishes like Yellowtail Tartare w/ Smoked Tofu & Caviar, Bloody Mary Ceviche, Lobster Tempura w/ Smoked Marie Rose Dip, House Smoked Ora King Salmon w/ Ginger & Sesame, and a $280 Sexy Tomahawk Steak. There’s also a dedicated caviar selection, the Sexy Fruit De Mer seafood option at $68pp, Signature Maki, Signature Nigiri, and a Premium Omakase at $230, which includes 10 signature dishes, and should definitively make for the sort of decadent night out we’ve been genuinely missing during all these months of lockdown. Everything is as beautifully presented as the restaurant’s name would suggest.

Still, for those hoping to indulge on a budget, every Monday – Friday from 4pm to 7pm is Yūgure, Sexy Fish Miami‘s original take on happy hour.

No surprise, things get decidedly nightclubby as the evening marches on, with a rotating cast of international DJs rocking the crowd into the wee hours. So yes, this is precisely the sort of statement restaurant that Miami loves, and that is also the perfect antidote to all the gloom and doom that has hung over the hospitality biz the last twenty-one months or so. Go…and have a very sexy time.
