MIAMI — Kyle Guy’s tenure as a Miami Heat short-timer ended Monday. Because of that, he has a new start on something more tangible and enduring.

The guard initially added Dec. 30 on a pair of emergency 10-day contracts amid the Heat’s COVID outbreak formally signed his two-way contract Monday, one that will carry him through the balance of the regular season.

The 3-point specialist drafted out of Virginia by the Sacramento Kings in the 2019 second round said he arrived without expectations.

“I never looked at how things could happen, because then you’re just limiting the infinite possibilities,” he said after the morning shootaround, ahead of the Heat’s game against the Toronto Raptors at FTX Arena. “So if I would have said I want to take the two-way from somebody, then it probably wouldn’t have happened.

“I just wanted to be a part of the team. I didn’t really care what the contract was. It worked out the way that it did, so I don’t look at the how. I’m just happy that it happened.”

Guy replaces undrafted Kansas rookie guard Marcus Garrett on the second of the Heat’s two-way contracts, with Caleb Martin holding the other. Garrett was waived because of a wrist injury, but will rehabilitate at the Heat’s facilities.

“Obviously it’s never a good thing to waive somebody,” Heat guard Max Strus said Monday of Garrett. “But he’s still going to be around, so we’re happy to have him around here, too.

“But Kyle’s been awesome and he definitely deserves it the way he played and the way he works, and he’s been here every single day early. And he wants to be here and wants to get better. So we’re all happy to have him here, happy to have him with the group.”

Guy said he hopes he has found an NBA home, having previously also played summer league for the Golden State Warriors and then spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ G League affiliate.

“I love how this organization runs things,” he said. “Obviously I was only here for 16, 17 days so far. But it’s been everything you can hope for, so super excited.

“I think my game is very fluid. You know what you’re getting: a good teammate, play the right way, make open shots and plays for others.”

With the shift from his emergency 10-day contract, Guy’s status changed from ineligible to available for Monday night’s game.

Forward Chris Silva, by contrast, remained ineligible on his two-way contract, since the Heat no longer have players in NBA health-and-safety protocols. Silva’s 10-day contract expires Wednesday.

In addition to Silva, also listed as out for Monday by the Heat were Markieff Morris (return to competition reconditioning), Victor Oladipo (knee) , KZ Okpala (wrist) and Kyle Lowry (personal reasons).

Strus said it was heartening in one particular aspect about having center Bam Adebayo returning to the team’s mix from December thumb surgery.

“He’s been playing on the scout team in practice, so thankfully we don’t have to deal with that anymore,” Strus said with a laugh. “So good to have him back and we’re super excited for him and happy for his return.”

Strus said there will be work to do regarding acclimating returning players.

“We all just got to be ready for it and we all got to adjust to it ourselves and just be prepared for whatever,” he said, “and at the end of the day the only thing that matters is if we win.”

Mario Chalmers’ first two games with the Heat’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, came in a pair of weekend home losses in South Dakota to the Memphis Grizzlies’ affiliate, the Memphis Hustle.

The former Heat guard closed with 16 points off the bench in his Saturday debut, albeit on 4-of-15 shooting from the field and 2-of-9 inaccuracy on 3-pointers. He also had six rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in his 30:10.

On Sunday, again paying in reserve, Chalmers, 35, closed with six points on 3-of-8 shooting (0 for 5 on 3-pointers) in 17:52.

Chalmers, who did not play during his recent 10-day contract with the Heat, is free to sign with any NBA team.
