On Tuesday, a National League East matchup between one team trying to find their early season touch takes on a team well out of the playoff picture, as the New York Mets get set to meet the Miami Marlins in game one of their three-game series.
The Mets, who at one point held the East division lead for the what felt like months, have stumbled down the stretch, and see the gap between them and the division leaders growing. Heading into Tuesday, they are 68-68, and are 3.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves for first in the East. While the majority of August was abysmal for New York, they picked up some steam towards the end of the month, and at the beginning of September, as they won six straight before falling to the Washington Nationals Saturday.
The Marlins had a decent start to their 2021 campaign, but they have been a mainstay towards the bottom of the division for most of the season. They are not in last, at the moment, as they are just a half-game ahead of the Nationals. Their 57-79 records has them sitting double-digits back of the Braves and the second NL Wild Card spot.
